DARKHYTHE

Anis and her brother Jatz wish their parents would realise they are now adults.
Their life changes when they discover two strange looking men washed up on the beach. The men are telepaths, people outlawed in their home nation of Dreck. The two men must travel to Orta on the opposite side of the continent. The siblings agree to help them, anticipating an adventurous trip, but it is much harder than they thought. The badlands in the centre of the continent are dangerous so their route must go via several other nations, On the way they are joined by three other travellers who have their own reasons for leaving their home nations.
When they reach the border of Orta they find their journey is not over. Two members of the Orta nation join them and insist they must all complete a task which will take them into the dangerous badlands and ultimately to Darkhythe.. This task must be completed before they can return home.

   Darhythe Excerpt

Anis strolled along the sand, face lifted to enjoy the warmth of the sun shining down from the clear blue sky. Last night the storm had whipped the sea into a frenzy, but now the surface lay flat and calm and clean sand showed only her footprints along the edge of the turquoise water. Waves lapped at the beach, their white crests stroking the golden sand. The tide reached its limit and the waves retreated, leaving a line of froth on the sand.

Arms held wide at shoulder height, Anis turned into the gentle breeze coming from the sea, her blonde hair flicking behind her. A flying tackle sent her backwards to land on the sand.

“Gotcha.”

“Oh grow up, Jatz.” Blue eyes flashing with anger, Anis rose, brushing down her tunic and skirt. “Why can’t you enjoy the day without being such a nuisance? I thought you were helping dad with the stock records.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Jatz turned away, bored by his sister’s scolding. He’d heard it all before, but it didn’t make any impression on him. “Dad says he’s not ready yet.”

The siblings turned and walked along the water’s edge. Jatz was slightly smaller than Anis, but his blond hair and tanned skin were exactly the same colour as his sister’s. The youth skimmed several stones across the water before he ran out of missiles and wandered up the beach to find a fresh supply.

Anis carried on walking but frowned as she saw wreckage further along the beach. A small mast leaned drunkenly out of the sand with a barrel rolling backward and forward at the water’s edge.

“Hey, Anis. Come here, quick!”

Jatz’s search had taken him round a large rock at the top edge of the sand. She thought her brother was fooling around, but a further frantic shout made Anis race to join him. Instead of a wounded Jatz, she found him staring at the ground behind the rock. Anis gasped. Two bodies sprawled on the sand. She knelt and checked them over for any signs of life, but when she looked at their faces, she frowned. Both were totally unlike any people she’d seen or heard of before.

“Anis, where do you think they came from?”

The two golden skin, oval-shaped faces and unusual shade of dark gold hair proved they were not from their own land of Dreck. The strangers’ closed eyes appeared larger and rounder than usual and all these differences set them apart from her and her brother. Anis and Jatz’s blond hair, blue eyes and lightly tanned skin were like the rest of the people of Dreck. These two men had darker hair and skin. Also their faces weren’t the same shape as the people of Dreck. Who were they?
